India has lately seen a flurry of startups, indicating a thriving environment of ideas and tech solutions to implement these ideas. In fact, India is home to the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, with about 60,000 startups. With so many startups jostling for every inch of the market, the use of technology to stand out from the rest is an obvious strategy. This allows several competing technologies to co-exist and thrive in the market. The adoption of various technologies dictates the kind of skills required to drive the development of business applications. That brings us to the skills in software development and programming languages that will see a sustained demand this year. We shall take a look at these programming languages, but before that let’s dive in to do a quick dipstick on technologies driving the demand for skills in these programming languages.
Technologies that will be in demand in 2022
To get a good view of the technologies dominating the market and will continue to dominate in 2022, you will need to gauge the direction of technology adoption by businesses. Businesses today are investing in primarily three technologies.
Data Science (including data infrastructure like Big Data)
Businesses have long known the importance of data. Those that have been in operation for a while realise the power of Big Data to help them scale up their business. Many large enterprises have already demonstrated the benefits of big data and related analytics that it enables. Popular AI techniques like Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Neural Networks thrive on massive data sets. Businesses that are starting up, realise this but do not want to invest huge capital upfront. They climb the Cloud Computing train, which we shall come to in a bit. This demand for data-aware business applications will drive this year’s talent demands in the job market.
Responsive web apps (that work off any device)
With smartphones becoming ubiquitous and the sheer variance in the spectrum of device capabilities, it becomes essential for businesses to design customer-facing interfaces like websites and apps that cater to virtually every kind of device hardware. The rendering of web components on devices, in particular, is a major concern. This has resulted in a massive push for hiring talent in UI, UX and mobile development. The startup culture has pushed this even further and increased the demand for web developers (full stack or otherwise).
Cloud Computing
Ideally, startups would like to hit the ground running, and there is no better way to do that than havig a cloud strategy. Cloud infrastructure allows businesses to be flexible and nimble. On this front, businesses want developers who can build cloud-native applications, be able to integrate various cloud tools available from major cloud infrastructure providers and leverage the power of scale.
Programming languages that will be in demand in 2022
The mad dash to be data intelligent and smart internal data analytics applications has increased the demand for programmers proficient with programming languages like Python and R. Also in demand are functional programming languages like Scala. Other languages that an aspiring developer in this field should have proficiency in are Java, JavaScript and Ruby.
Demand for responsive websites has spiked the demand for skills in web development. The need for full-stack web development talent has also skyrocketed. Programming languages that allow the development of flexible and dynamic interfaces have seen increased demand in the current job market. General-purpose languages like Javascript, Java and Python that are well-tuned to building web applications find their space here too. Full-stack web development will need one to be proficient with languages like JavaScript, Python, Java, PHP, Ruby among others. Mobile app development, testing, and maintenance have increased the demand for developers proficient in programming languages like Swift, Kotlin, Flutter, C++, C# and JavaScript. Furthermore, skills in NOSQL technologies like MongoDB and Cassandra have also witnessed an incline.
The complex design and display strategies have given credence to UI and UX design and development. Designers are required to be proficient with foundational skills of the web like HTML and CSS, and JavaScript is a popular language in this space.
The burgeoning cloud computing market has led to an increase in demand for full-stack web developers well versed in programming languages like Java, PHIP, .Net, Python, Golang, Ruby, and JavaScript. The key skill here is to build cloud-native applications using these programming languages.
Software Development Jobs that will be in demand in 2022
The demand for skills drives the job market giving rise to a multitude of positions to choose from. This year, the job market is likely to be dominated by data-centric jobs like Data Scientists, Data Analysts or Machine Learning developers.
Demand in web and mobile development has flooded the market with jobs like Full Stack Developer, Mobile Developer/Engineer, Android Developer, iOS Developer, UI/UX Designer/Developer/Engineer.
The continued growth being seen in the cloud computing market will see a sustained requirement for jobs like Cloud Engineer/Cloud Developer/Cloud Architect along with Full Stack developer through the rest of 2022.
Take Away
If programming and development is your calling, you as a learner should select one of these upcoming domains and hone your skills in the programming languages that help build applications in that particular domain. To cite an example, if data is what interests you, you could choose programming languages like Python or R to start with. Cognizant of the increasing need for these emerging technologies and skill sets, the online Higher EdTech players have created an extensive list of certifications and courses that offer learners hands-on and outcome-oriented learning. Therefore, now working professionals and freshers can assess their upskilling needs and continue learning online flexibly.
