Information Technology Director Cindy Hewett
BOLIVIA, N.C. – As Brunswick County continues to celebrate our local volunteers, Brunswick County’s newest Information Technology Director Cindy Hewett describes the importance of staying engaged in the community while taking on her new role.
With more than 35 years of experience in technical support services and information technology, Hewett is ready to lead Brunswick County’s IT Department forward.
“We are here to serve and to help make our world a better place for all,” Hewett said. “I believe it is our responsibility to care for those in need. I love serving the community where I grew up and continue to call this home. For me, it is rewarding and satisfying to know the work I am involved with can make a positive difference and improve the quality of life for the people who live here.”
Hewett joined the Brunswick County team in December after serving as New Hanover County’s Deputy Chief Information Officer since 2013. She also previously served as a Business Systems Analyst for the New Hanover County IT Department (2008-2013), the Support Services Director for the New Hanover County Health Department (1999-2008), support for the Brunswick County Health Department (1995-1999), and as the Logistics Coordinator, Application Tester, and Technical Writer for a government contracting firm (1983-1995).
Hewett joins Deputy IT Directors Andrew Byron and Michael Read in supporting overall technical operations for the county under the direction of County Manager Steve Stone.
“Cindy has been a valuable addition to our team,” Stone said. “Her project planning experience and knowledge is already showing positive results. We anticipate she will bring beneficial changes over the next several years as our county continues to progress and implement the latest technologies into our operations.”
Hewett is responsible for leading the Brunswick County IT Staff in providing effective and efficient technology related services to all Brunswick County departments and those the County serves, as well as overseeing and improving cybersecurity, the customer experience, and overall day-to-day operations. She is also tasked with recommending, introducing, implementing, and supporting technology solutions for all county departments.
“I am excited to work with my staff as we continue moving our organization forward,” Hewett said. “As a team, we are implementing new ways of managing and tracking our workload and improving our department’s service delivery. We are also working to improve the County’s overall cybersecurity posture through increasing our cybersecurity resilience, reducing our risks and vulnerabilities against cyber threats, and collaboratively breaking down barriers.”
Some of Hewett’s key accomplishments during her time in New Hanover County include her work in preparing its workforce for telework in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and providing exemplary service during emergency activations like Hurricane Florence. Hewett and her staff received special recognition from New Hanover County management for their work during Hurricane Florence.
She was also involved in various initiatives while working in the New Hanover County IT Department, resulting in Hewett being awarded that County’s 5-STAR Stellar Award.
Outside of her work as the IT Director, Hewett spends her time volunteering for local communities within Brunswick County. Her most recent initiative is working with the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce as a member of the North Carolina Oyster Festival Committee, which she plans to continue participating in this October.
Hewett was recently installed as the 1st Vice-President for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of North Carolina (GFWC-NC) State Board, where she just completed her term as Treasurer and Fundraising Chairman.  She is an active member of the South Brunswick Islands chapter (GFWC-SBI) and the newly established Cape Fear Woman’s Club chapter (CFWC). Through this 501c3 organization, Hewett works with additional volunteers to raise funds for other local, state, national, and international nonprofit organizations.
In addition to fundraising, she works with her team of volunteers on a variety of hands-on projects, such as providing Little Free Libraries in local community parks, no-sew blankets for military families through the March of Dimes, and by providing needed supplies and clothing for students in several local schools.
Service is also at the heart of Hewett’s family. Along with her experience in the public sector, Hewett’s husband, David, is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and currently serves as the town manager of the Town of Holden Beach. Their son Zachary serves as the finance director for the Village of Bald Head Island. Their youngest son Ian follows in the family’s footsteps by attending East Carolina University, where he is an active member of the Honor Society.
“Brunswick County is a beautiful place to live,” Hewett said. “The people who live here are fantastic and it makes my volunteer and professional work that much more enjoyable. Serving this community through my work with the County is something I treasure. I am amazed by the broad spectrum and quality of services we provide daily, the commitment and compassion of the staff, management, and elected officials, and the impact each of these have on the residents we serve.”
Hewett holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from East Carolina University and a Master of Science degree in Information Systems from Hawaii Pacific University. As an advocate for continual learning, she has completed several additional programs through the UNC-School of Government.
